Joey and Harton: A Partnership With Purpose

Tails of Valor did not just give Joey a service dog. They gave him a partner with a purpose. Harton helps him stay in a more stable state — recognizing changes in his behavior before he does, reading his body language, and sensing shifts in stress and heart rhythm. Harton alerts him so he can slow down and reset instead of spiraling.

Joey has spent years rebuilding his life through running and coaching. Now he is rebuilding the inside too. Harton helps him stay present, healthy, and connected to the world around him instead of getting lost in his own head.

On a recent outing, Joey took Harton into a classroom to read After the Fall with the kids — a story about Humpty Dumpty rebuilding piece by piece after his fall. It was a reminder that life will knock us down, sometimes hard, but the fall isn't the end unless we decide it is. What matters is the rising.

Joey is grateful for the program, for the people who believed in him when he did not always believe in himself, and for the dog who shows up every day ready to work, ready to help, and ready to walk with him through whatever comes next.
